New York Mills to Return to In-Person Learning January 4th

December 18, 2020

Dear District #553 Families:

I trust this letter finds you well and preparing for an extended holiday break.  My hope is that everyone is able to create special memories in the coming days, as well as some much needed respite from the challenges of this year and the COVID pandemic.

With just three school days left prior to the break, I want to provide some clear communication about the NY Mills School plan following the holiday break.  New York Mills Public School will resume full In-Person Learning PK-12 grade on January 4, 2021. The transition back to full In-Person learning will return us back to the schedule we had at the beginning of the school year--students will attend school Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.  Busses will run as normal in the morning and after school. We will continue to implement the  2 p.m. release time to accommodate our Distance Learning by Choice families.

Our district recognizes that under the Governor’s Executive Order 20-103 there are some additional changes made to the Safe Learning Plan.  We are currently working with the Minnesota Department of Health and will implement the additional safety protocols outlined in the plan by January 18, 2021.

As we return on Monday, January 4th, 2021, we will continue to follow MDH’s Decision Tree and exclude or quarantine students and staff as necessary.  This means there may still be some interruptions in our In-Person Learning, but we will work diligently to continue In-Person Learning as much as is feasible. Please note that the newest executive order does say elementary students will stay In-Person regardless of local case numbers. However, an exposure could force specific classrooms to move back to distance learning for a short period of time.  We ask all our families to practice good COVID practices, including masking in public, maintaining six feet of social distancing as much as possible, encouraging good hand washing hygiene, and reporting illnesses to the school health office at 385-4216.

Other items to note:

  • If families wish to continue in Distance Learning, they should notify the school office by Wednesday, December 23.
  • Starting January 4, meal pick up for Distance Learners will be from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
  • NYM School Holiday Break starts Thursday, December 24, with school resuming on Monday, January 4. There will NOT be school meals available during the holiday break, nor will there be School Age Child Care available.

As changes are made, the New York Mills Public School is committed to communicating with our families. We utilize parent email (if we have one on file), the NYM website and the NYM Facebook page for communication. Please do not hesitate to contact the school with questions or concerns.

Be well, everyone!
