NYM students to participate in state book award

New York Mills Elementary students will have the opportunity to help choose the winners of the Maud Hart Lovelace Award and the Star of the North Award.

The Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award is a children's read and vote book award. Students in grades 3-5 who have read or listened to at least three titles from the Division I nominee list and students in grades 6-8 who have read or listened to at least three titles from the Division II nominee list are eligible to vote for the Maud Hart Lovelace Award. After reading at least three titles from the list, students can vote for their favorite title from Feb. 25-March 31. This spring, students that voted will be invited to an ice cream celebration to discover the school winner and the state winner.

The Star of the North Award is given to a one picture book each year. Children in grades kindergarten through second grade are eligible to help choose the winning book. In NY Mills, all 10 books have been purchased for the Elementary Media Center. Librarian Nancy Schik will read all 10 books to the k-2 grade classes during library time this fall. Students are then able to vote for their favorite title from Feb. 25-March 31.

Copies of these books have been purchased using grant funding from the NYM Education Foundation. Fifth grade teacher Lisa Stroeing applied for the grant funding, in order to do this program.
