The Eaglet, April 2012

Parents,                                                                                                                         April Newsletter

April showers are here! Yeah, it is finally spring and smiles abound all over our community! We got very lucky with our pleasant winter and all of us at NYM Elementary are counting on two more months of luck as we prepare for the homestretch. Many books will be read, and many tests will be taken in the upcoming months, so please do your best to help your child finish this school year off as perfectly as he/she began it. Please read below some of the important information that will be going on as we move through the spring.

NO SCHOOL:We will not be having school this Friday (April 6th), nor next Monday (April 9th) as we begin our version of Spring Break…please do not send students to school those days, nor to Irene’s School-Aged Child Care, as she will be closed those days as well.

Ottertail County Dental Outreach Clinic: April 23 & 24; a Dental Outreach Clinic specifically designed to provide dental services to children ages 1-12…appointments must be made in advance by calling 1-888-683-1038. To be held at the OTC Office Building in NYM. It is available for children covered by Minnesota Health Care Programs and Minnesota Medical Assistance.

From the Health Office:  Public Health will not be holding the 6th grade immunization clinic at the school as not enough students were signed up.  You can still get them done at the Public Health Office in New York Mills by calling 385-5500 or by calling your health care provider.  The vaccines need to be done prior to starting 7th grade in the fall.  For questions call the health office at 385-4216.

Community Supporting Schools “Garage Sale”:On Saturday, April 14th, the same committee that brought you the elementary carnival will be hosting a Garage Sale in the Sports Center gym. If you are interested in selling children’s items (only) at this garage sale, please contact Kelly Van Schaik at 218-686-2171 or e-mail her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information. Spots are still available, but going fast…

Elementary Trailblazers:the IMPACT Team is just finishing up its activities for National Nutrition month, which was March. By Monday, April 9th, students need to return the signed log sheets to their classrooms in order for their classes to be eligible for the end-of-program prizes. Questions, please contact Pat Fredley at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or 218-298-4342.

MCA Testing: As we move through the spring, many students will be taking the statewide tests that measure how we are doing compared to every other school in the state. Our 5th and 6th graders will be taking their reading tests during the week of April 16-20, and all students in grades 3-6 will be taking their final round of MCA math tests beginning April 30th. Please help your child get sufficient sleep the night before the test, and please make sure they eat a great breakfast on the morning of the test. Let’s all do our part to best help them succeed….
